Gobble Gobble Saucy Turkey Burgers

Since we stopped buying hamburger as part of a heart healthy diet shift, it's been difficult to switch to ground chicken or turkey. Just too bland! But this recipe (adapted from a magazine) has so much STUFF included that it makes a delicious, easy dinner. The double-gobble comes from using both ground turkey and turkey bacon. One pound yields 6 burgers here, but we plan to try larger (4 per pound) burgers on the grill this summer.

Cranberry Ketchup (recipe below)
6 oz. turkey bacon (crosswise cut slices)
1 lb. ground turkey
1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp. basil
1/2 tsp. sage
2 cloves minced garlic
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
6 hamburger buns
lettuce and tomato slices

Make cranberry ketchup. Cook bacon. Set both aside.

In a bowl, mix ground turkey, onion, garlic and spices. Shape into 6 patties and broil, turning once. Lay out open buns on cookie sheet and sprinkle cheese on the bottom halves. Turn off oven and slightly toast them until cheese melted. Assemble burgers with bottom cheesy bun, burger, cranberry ketchup, 2 crossed bacon slices, tomato slice, lettuce and bun top.

Cranberry Ketchup

1/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup cranberries (fresh or frozen)
3 tbsp. spicy brown mustard
3 tbsp. ketchup
2 shots of Worcestershire sauce
2 shots of hot sauce
1/4 tsp. paprika

Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan. Bring to boiling over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered about 5 minutes more, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cover until needed.

Being a Better Citizen: Will Guzzardi for Illinois State Representative 39th District

I'm doing something I've never done in my several decades as a voting citizen: I'm volunteering for a candidate. If you happen to live in Illinois' 39th District on the northwest side of Chicago, you just may get a call from me introducing candidate Will Guzzardi. He's running against our incumbent, Toni Berrios, in the Democratic Primary on March 20th. FYI, there are no Republican candidates (it's Chicago, ya know), so in essence this is the election.

Will Guzzardi is a smart and sincere young man who came knocking on our door one evening. He lives in the Logan Square neighborhood, and has been an active community leader. He is also a local journalist, having worked for the Chicago page of the Huffington Post. He covered local community leaders and exposed corruption in Chicago politics. He was inspired to run for public office to put our needs above those of special interests. And that's not just a slogan, it's the sad reality in Illinois. After all, our last two governors are convicted felons.

As I wrote in the sidebar announcing my 2012 New Year's resolutions: In Chicago, Cook County, and the state of Illinois our government is despicable. An embarrassment at best, and dangerously close to ruin. We voters need to take responsibility for this situation, and I vow to take a more active role in making it better.

I thought it was time I quit complaining and did something. So I make calls to registered voters two days a week for Will. I invite you to learn about him at his website http://WillGuzzardi.com where you will find specific stands on the issues most important to us. It's important to note these stands on issues are much more specific than anything I've ever seen from Toni Berrios. How refreshing!

Our incumbent, Toni Berrios, is the daughter of Joe Berrios, a long-time fixture in Chicago politics who, in my opinion, has no regard for the citizens he serves and every interest in his own personal success. He talks about open government, then hires his relatives days after his election. He is a paid lobbyist and owns an insurance company. His daughter was elected 10 years ago on her name, of course. And she happens to sit on committees that benefit her father and his clients.

We voters have let her get away with pandering to her father's interests for 10 years, and it's time for her to go. The Berrios power is so entrenched that she rarely has an opponent in her elections. This time around I am thrilled to help someone finally defeat her.

This Illinois Review article shows clearly and plainly the underhanded "circle of democratic life" with both Joe and Toni Berrios in power.

This Chicago Sun-Times article shows Toni's total lack of understanding of the disastrous condition of Illinois. She prattles on about improving the quality of family life, yet her first solution for the budget crisis is to raise our income taxes.

We received a door-knob flyer this weekend, our first communication from Toni Berrios since the last election. I noticed that it is clearly a campaign piece, yet doesn't state who paid for it. I wonder if it was me? It's also funny, because she's taking the "change" tactic: the word "re-elect" appears nowhere, and she says she wants to "take positive steps towards changing the direction of our state." Hmm...seems to me that just shows how little she has accomplished after 10 years in office!

An Antique and Handmade in One

At Etsy.com, my online shop venue, handcrafted goods mingle with my fellow vintage dealers for a destination that's all about buying one-of-a-kind treasures. It's a rare delight when I find a piece that is both vintage and handmade!

This unusual serving tray may also be hung on the wall, as the wire is already in place. I acquired this piece from a Victorian clothing collector, who estimated it was handmade in the 1920s. But the backing paper (made from an old gift shop bag) makes me think it was a little later...1940s perhaps? What do you think?

It appears the tray was created by adding brass handles to a picture frame with glass. The insert is an original page from Peterson's Magazine, September 1882. The caption includes "Le Modes Parisiennes" and the costumes are titled, "At the Country House." How charming!

The tray measures 13 1/4" long x 11" wide (15 1/2" long with handles). Condition is very good, with discoloration of the page as seen in the photos, and some wear to both the frame and backing. Being a Better Consumer: Durable (Ultra Foil) vs. Reynold's Wrap Aluminum Foil

Since we're trying to buy more American products this year (see sidebar for details), I was intrigued by a Reynold's Wrap print ad stating, "Weak foil is foreign to us." Clever, right? The ad continues:

American made since 1947. Manufactured to the highest of American standards, Reynolds Wrap Foil is pure aluminum. Next time, check where other foils are made and know what you're getting yourself wrapped up in.

Understanding the copywriters are trying to be cute, we'll forgive ending the sentence with a preposition...

Okay! I decided to take up that challenge. I started in our own kitchen. Guess what? The brand we currently have on hand is also Made in USA (since 1946, in fact). The Durable brand is headquartered just outside of Chicago, so bonus points to us for supporting Illinois businesses.

"Ultra Foil" seems to be a bargain choice brand from Durable, and the price is certainly lower than Reynolds. I can tell you that from our usage the quality is just fine. Sorry, Reynolds! Durable wins in our book.

Researching this post gave me a headache. Seems Reynolds has a stranglehold on the market. It was difficult to even find other brands and where they were made. I recalled purchasing brands such as Premier and Diamond, but couldn't tell their country of origin. Besides, I remember them being a bit too flimsy. To give you an idea, there are thousands of generic labels available from Chinese wholesalers here at alibaba.com.

Bottom line, we encourage you to seek out Durable's "Ultra Foil" pictured above. They also have a Durable brand, which looks like this...

Did you know aluminum foil can be recycled? Include it with your aluminum can recycling, please! And, of course, let's all try to use less of this product since it is extruded from the earth.

Advantages of Soy Wax Candles

As a reference post, I'd like to lay out the many advantages of soy wax candles. Please also indulge me as I de-bunk a few claims I've read that have bugged the heck out of me!

If you've never had a soy wax candle, you will be delighted by its creamy appearance. Soy wax is a relatively new product, derived from soy beans and first developed about 20 years ago. There are many brands and types available now, and I tried six or seven before settling on the best for me. Soy wax costs more, but I could not in good conscience ever use paraffin wax.

Most importantly, soy wax is a biodegradable renewable resource, while paraffin is a petroleum product. That's a double-bonus as far as I'm concerned--using less petroleum and more renewable stuff. We all need to look at our consumption of earth's bounty.

De-bunk: Beware of the phrase "soy blend." Giant corporations are now touting this in mass-produced drug store candles that mimic handmade. Unless they disclose the exact ratio, you could be buying 90% paraffin and 10% soy.

It's important to me to use only wax from US grown soybeans. This decision is strictly based on my desire to support American companies, who have suffered due to multi-national globalization.

De-bunk: I've seen candlemakers tout soy wax "Supports family farmers!" Well, I've traveled through Illinois and seen mile after mile of giant corporate soybean fields. So, unless you know where every bean came from, you're not necessarily helping family farms.

Soy wax candles burn longer, about 50% longer than paraffin wax. My smallest teacup candle (6 oz) will burn for 36+ hours! I figure my burn times at 6 hours per ounce, but many customers tell me theirs burn much longer.

Soy candles also hold scent better. You will be amazed at the scents. Soy candles have both a better hot (burning) and cold (sitting) scent throw. In a small room, you don't even need to light the candle to enjoy the scent. I was so frustrated before I became a chandler (candlemaker) at purchasing candles that smelled great in the store but were virtually scentless when burned!

I use high quality synthetic fragrance oils, tested by me for the truest scents. I've tried essential oils, too, but find them to be no better for candles. Besides, there can be an argument made that producing a synthetic is better because it doesn't consume natural materials.

De-bunk: Have you ever read someone's candles are "triple-scented"? I have no idea what that means. In my experience, using the recommended amount of fragrance oil provides plenty of aromatic goodness, and when I've used more, the candles become bubbly when burned.

Soy wax candles burn cleaner, producing less soot than paraffin candles, which may be preferable for sensitive people. You will not see much smoke rising from a soy candle during and after the burn.

De-bunk: Everything that burns produces soot, so be wary when someone says a candle produces "no soot." Soy wax produces less soot, some call it "white" soot as opposed to "black" soot. And, not being an allergist, I would never claim my candles are fine for people with allergies. That one always worries me....only you know what you can tolerate!

Another feature of soy wax is that is has a low melting point (much lower than paraffin). I'm often asked if my vintage glass or china containers might crack when burned, but burning soy wax is almost like a hot cup of coffee--with no problems at all in more than 800 I've created so far. Also, because of the low melting point, you may notice beading on top of the candle if the temps are very high or your candle is placed in direct sunlight.

On the practical side, soy candles mean easy clean-up with soap and water, which is essential for me since my containers are also collectible--and often valuable--china pieces. With every candle purchased from ReBop Shop, I include a Candle Care tip sheet and clean-up instructions.

Scents Saturday: Peach Cobbler

Sweet, fresh peaches are the pleasurable scent in my Peach Cobbler handmade soy candles. Fruit scents are usually the most popular at craft fairs, so I try to always have at least a couple on hand!

The "Cobbler" part comes from a vanilla undertone that represents the sugary baked crust. It makes for a complex and welcoming scent that works well in your home year 'round. In Winter it's warm and cozy, in Summer it's fresh and fruity!

Being a Better Consumer: Marcal Paper Towel

It's a rare victory when the best quality product is also the best value and environmentally conscious. That's the case with Marcal Small Steps Paper Towels. At our grocery store, they are often on sale at $4.99 for an 8-pack--unheard of with any of the large brands! So the price is best.

My husband won't even go down the paper towel aisle, because I've told him there's so much to check before choosing: 1-ply vs. 2-ply, size of sheet, number of sheets per roll, total square feet. It is an adversarial contest between the deceptive packaging of big brands and the consumer seeking the best value. I can tell you with full confidence that the quality of Marcal is superb--the sheets are strong and one goes a long way while cleaning. So quality is best.

Thirdly, the company introduced "Small Steps" in 2009, a 100% recycled product that is bleached without chlorine. We used Marcal long before that, so this was a wonderful development.

Finally, Marcal Manufacturing is located in Elmwood Park, New Jersey and was established in 1950. We are glad to support a smaller brand that is not "multi-national" and considers itself part of its community. Scents Saturday: Pineapple Ginger

I am absolutely thrilled with this scent! I think offering a tropical scent is essential, since nothing carries you away like the memory of a vacation long past. And nothing creates a party mood like scents from the island, mon! But it's very difficult for me to find a coconut scent I really like. I'm just not a big fan, I guess. And they are often tempered with too much vanilla, which masks the true coconut in my opinion.

My Pineapple Ginger is the perfect solution. Both scents are equally represented, providing a warm tropical ambiance that is very pleasing. The ginger is refreshing, and the pineapple is true--which means not too sweet.

Being a Better Consumer: Jiffy Mix vs. Bisquick

As announced in the sidebar of this blog, one of my 2012 New Year's resolutions is to be a better consumer...to speak with our dollars. I hope to publish comparisons of everyday purchases to show our family's decision making process. Unlike other "frugal" blogs, these endorsements are entirely independent of any corporate involvement.

First up, baking mixes. We generally buy Jiffy Baking Mix for its lower price, but I wanted to check out Bisquick as well to see if ours was a sound decision. Fortunately, both are owned by U.S. based companies, but there is quite a bit of difference in their operations.

Bisquick is owned by General Mills, Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis with a manufacturing presence in 30 countries. It's huge--one of the largest food manufacturers in the world.

Jiffy Mix is owned by the Chelsea Milling Company of Chelsea, Michigan. From their website:

Chelsea Milling Company is a complete manufacturer. We store wheat. We mill wheat in to flour. We use that flour for our own mixes. We make our own “little blue” boxes. We do it all-that’s why our mixes provide you with the best possible value.

The ingredients of both products are essentially the same. I'll continue with Jiffy Mix for both the price and the underdog factor. In addition, Bisquick is now offered in a plastic container for "convenience." No, thanks. We're shunning plastic packaging whenever possible!

Window Shopping: Loving Winter

Here in Chicago, winter as finally set in. I shouldn’t complain! No shoveling, no slipping and sliding, and kinder than normal gas and electric bills! That’s been a relief, but I like a little snow on the ground. Really I do. Scents Saturday: Heather

I've been lucky enough to visit England and Scotland. I've been lucky enough to see heather growing abundantly. But I must admit...I never smelled it. Let's face it, if I say "lilac" or "rose," you're going to have a sense memory of that aroma. But heather?

So this one is extra tough to describe without benefit of Smell-o-Screen. Personally, I tend to judge florals in fragrance oils by how sweet they are. I don't care for very sweet florals, but my mom loves them. And I like my heather scent....while she doesn't get as excited about it.

This heather is clean and romantic. It's very fresh, with faint rose topnotes. As with all my candle scents, it is complex. I think this heather is wonderful for a romantic interlude or just a cozy afternoon curling up with a good book.

Scents Saturday: Lilac

My lilac scented candles are special to me for many reasons. It took quite a while to find the perfect lilac, a scent that was true to the nostalgic spring flower and not overly sweet. Now I finally have it!

Lilacs are around for such a short time...and they conjure childhood memories for me. I would cut a bouquet for my teacher, then Mom wrapped the ends in wet paper towel and aluminum foil for safe transport (in the olden days, when we walked to school).

I knew I'd be a grown-up when I had my own lilac bush. It was one of the first things I planted when we bought our house 12 years ago. I love old television shows! As a vintage freak, I can't help but study the sets and props that tell the story of home life in that era. See if you recognize these...

Did you ever notice the Bunkers had a ceramic black panther atop their television set? Although All in the Family ran in the 1970s, that kitschy icon dates much earlier. But, of course, everything in Edith's decor is just a bit behind the times.
Yes, you can have one of your own from Callooh Callay on Etsy.

Speaking of the 70s, Mary Tyler Moore had a swell studio apartment, didn't she? You'll see both of these in her kitchen: black cast iron trivets hanging on the wall as decoration, and footed coffee cups. I tend to think these footed cups--almost always made in Japan--served as the segue between teacup/saucer sets and the jumbo coffee mugs we use today.

A decade before, Mary Tyler Moore's television kitchen was quite different. As Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show, she had a very well-appointed kitchen. One of her china sets was in the Cavalier shape by Homer Laughlin. The example below can be seen at The China Girl on Etsy. The Petries had a different pattern, but the two-tone look and shape are the same. Another staple in Laura's kitchen was a glass coffee carafe. Such a civilized way to bring coffee to the table!

Scents Saturday: Aspen Winter

As Thanksgiving and Christmas season planning begins, I annually get requests for a pine scent. Trouble is, I'm not a fan. And I have to love the scents since they permeate my home on candlemaking days! So I was thrilled to find this one.

Aspen Winter is a perfect blend of pine and cinnamon--like relaxing among the frosty pines apre ski with a cinnamon stick in your steaming hot beverage. Neither scent overpowers the other, they are very well balanced. Best of all, it's a great holiday scent without being strictly limited to Christmas. Or winter for that matter! I think it's fresh and delightful for any time of the year.

Pyrex Musical Staff, Friendship and More!

ReBop Shop has three vintage Pyrex delights right now! First up is a "happy accident," the marriage of three possibly unrelated pieces resulting in a swell 2-Quart Space Saver casserole set. Acquired as you see it, it turns out this is actually a compilation of two different late 1950s-early 1960s patterns:

575 Dish: an extremely rare "Musical Staff" pattern in black with gold staff pattern.
550 Lid: in the Golden Pine pattern, produced as a 1961 Christmas pattern.
Cradle: has flat wood handles and fits any Space Saver style.

The overall size of the set is 14 3/4" long x 7 1/2" wide x 4 1/4" tall. There is wear on the cradle's metal, but no damage. The black dish has some scuffs, but no scratches that show white. There are no chips or cracks or flakes on either glass piece!

Next, I simply adore the early 1970s Friendship pattern, with its flower power and peace dove design. I have a 4-pc baking set that includes a 2 1/2 quart lidded casserole and 1 quart lidded casserole. All 4 pieces are in superb condition with no chips, cracks or roughness. While the lids have slight wear, the milk glass dishes appear unused!

Then we have a classic midcentury Pyrex coffee carafe with warmer. This one has an atomic silver design on each side.The pot measures 9 1/2" tall and the stand is 5 5/8" diameter. Condition of all three pieces is superb with slightest wear to the flourish, but no wear to the silver band, Pyrex mark, lid or warmer. It appears to have never been used!

Bringing coffee to the table is soooo civilized! Laura Petrie always had one of these around...

Fruit scents for candles are perennially popular because they bring such a fresh feeling to your home. Spiced Plum has been part of my stable of scents for several years, because I adore its uniqueness.

I confess that when I first ordered this fragrance oil, I was afraid it would smell like old wine! But it doesn't at all--it's very fresh, slightly sweet, and complex with the delightful hint of spices underlying the fruity plum aroma.

Scenes From an Italian Restaurant

Scents Saturday: Chamomile Flower

I must confess that my favorite supplier called this simply, "Chamomile," and I thought I was ordering a tea scent! When my oils arrived, I realized I actually have Chamomile Flower. At craft shows I'm quick to explain that before my customer lifts the candle to her nose.

I like to call this a "dreamy" floral, as it is heady and sweet and carries you to daydreaming about a cottage garden. My mother loves this scent, and her tastes tend toward the traditional. Chamomile flower fragrance is said to relieve tension and anger. I think it's lovely for setting the mood at an afternoon tea, book club or any warm gathering of friends.

Reader Question About Canonsburg Pottery Co. Yellow T. Rose Pattern

Great blog! I just acquired a 35 piece set (5 cups, 6 saucers, 6 berry bowls, 5 soup bowls, 6 lunch plates, 6 b&b plates, veggie bowl, gravy boat & covered sugar bowl. Would you know anything about the Yellow T. Rose pattern? It's by The Hallmark (canon emblem) Canonsburg of Quality warranted 22kt. gold marking on back. It's beautiful, in excellent condition and I have been searching with very little luck finding this pattern anywhere! Thank you.

It looks like you have a lovely luncheon set! For those who may not know, plate sizes of vintage china can vary greatly from modern sizes. Dinner plates, for example, were as small as 9 7/8" diameter in the 1930s-1940s, while today our plates are "supersized" to 10 1/2" or more in diameter. Smaller salad plates and bread-and-butter (or dessert) plates did exist, as well as an in-between size called "Luncheon," which was usually 9" or less. Today, salad plates are bigger and have replaced that one for the most part.

I, too, had difficulty finding the "Yellow T. Rose" pattern. I did notice that a Pink T. Rose pattern was also produced. If they match, you might consider filling in with Pink, to create a whimsical mix in fine cottage chic style. Another option would be to look for solid yellow dinnerware from the same era, or another rose pattern that coordinates. Mixing patterns is all the rage these days, and you can fill in pieces to create a table setting that's uniquely yours.

The canon mark you mention was used 1930s-1950s. It's difficult to date more specifically, as Canonsburg did not use date codes and many pattern records have been lost. Rose patterns were common to every American pottery company during this period. I imagine they were highly desired by post-war brides setting up house and living the new American Dream.

Scents Saturday: Basil Olive

Of all my current candle scents, Basil Olive is most favored by men. There's nothing frou frou about it! It surrounds you with a Mediterranean ambiance of fresh basil and sultry olive. I think Basil Olive is perfect for parties, because of its slightly sensual nature and unisex appeal.

I'm burning a Basil Olive soy candle right now! I'm testing wick sizes for my new Scent Sampler candles in 4 oz quilted glass jelly jars. They are a nice alternative to larger candles when you want to try out a new scent. With their brushed silver decorative lids, they require no other packaging, making them perfect for adding to gift baskets, too.

By the way, did you know a candlemaker's choice of wicks can significantly affect burn times and quality? My wicks are 100% cotton, coated with natural soy wax (not paraffin), and I always use the size appropriate for the diameter of the container. If the wick is too small, your candle will only burn down the middle, wasting a lot of wax. If the wick is too large, your candle will burn too quickly! Wick choice separates the inexperienced candlemaker from the pro.

Here's another tip I'm experiencing as I burn this Basil Olive candle in summer-time Chicago: the scent is stronger when a breeze blows through the house. That means that movement of air in the room wafts the candle scent throughout, while still air keeps it contained in a smaller area. If you think your candle "isn't strong enough," that might be the reason!

A Pitch With Nothing to Sell: How I Lowered My Cholesterol from 240 to 162

It's true! A year ago my cholesterol had risen to 240. Now that I'm in my 50s, I thought some serious changes were overdue. Hey, it's your heart! Today the magic number is 162, with no self-help books, motivational tapes, pills, supplements, sprinkles or hypnosis. And here's how...

First, I gathered lots of information from many sources about low-cholesterol, low-fat foods. I pieced it all together into a lifestyle change my husband and I could enjoy without suffering. We are on a strict budget, so this is also a very frugal diet. Friends and family have asked for our plan, so I thought I'd lay it out here.

The first two rules are easy for us, as we never did this anyway. If you do, it will be a more radical change:

*No fast food
*No processed foods

The next rule was easier than we thought it would be:

*Double the vegetables/fruits you eat every day

As our salads got bigger, our meat portions got smaller. We also eat two meatless meals every week now. Branch out and try veggies you usually pass by in the produce aisle. Some might become new staples in your kitchen. One example is jicama--I love its refreshing taste and crispy texture.

In studying foods to lower cholesterol, I kept reading these three keys: soluble fiber, whole grains and Omega-3 fatty acids. So we also increased the foods with those benefits. We eliminated high fat foods, but I do eat low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese for the calcium I need at my age.

I took all this information and created a chart for our fridge. But you can cheat! My major weakness is pizza, so we now make our own with low-fat mozzarella, but also a ton of spinach for heart healthy benefits. Once in awhile we'll splurge on a bit of feta cheese for our salads. And we have not said no to birthday cake at a party. These indulgences have not hurt my numbers.

Here's a simplified version of the fridge chart (eliminating some detail), which is segmented by Fruits/Vegetables (7/day), Carbohydrates (4/day), Protein/Dairy (3/day) and Fats (3/day):

We have virtually eliminated these foods from our diet, but, for example, we will occasionally eat turkey kielbasa, turkey bacon or turkey Italian sausage.

Any ground meat
Sausage
Hot dogs
Packaged lunchmeat
Egg yolks
Ice cream
Cheese (except parmesan)
Butter
Mayonnaise
Peanut butter

We eat a lot of spinach these days. We eat a lot of turkey (our supermarket carries boneless/skinless turkey thighs we have prepared in a million different ways). We eat a lot of salmon, but fillets can be pricey. I have found lots of great recipes for canned salmon at alaskaseafood.org/

I just love sandwiches. But for your sandwiches, head to the deli counter. When turkey ham, turkey pastrami or boiled ham go on sale for $2.98/lb, that's better for you and cheaper than any over-priced, over-packaged processed lunchmeat. Instead of mayo, I use low-fat ranch dressing or mustard. I substitute tomato slices for my beloved cheese, and doubled the lettuce for bulk.

I didn't cover beverages, but basically I cut out beer--not that it was a staple, but it is sorely missed on a hot summer evening! I do drink diet soda and ice tea, but also several glasses of water every day.

You have to be willing to prepare your own meals, but this is also our frugal way of life. We rarely eat out or order in, and you'll never find a box of mac 'n cheese in our cupboard. You don't have to be a gourmet--my husband is a great cook, but I'm only interested in meals that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

And I don't care what anyone says about McDonald's being a cheaper way to eat--that's bull! Regular weekly shopping for fresh groceries and preparing your own balanced meals is far cheaper. Resist the urge to "just pick something up" (either groceries or takeout) and you will have far better control of both the cost and quality of your meals.

Scents Saturday: Lemon Grass

Welcome to Scents Saturday, wherein I attempt to describe my candle scents in a little more detail without benefit of Smell-o-Screen.

All citrus scents--and especially lemon--are invigorating in aromatherapy. When you're feeling down, tired or just need a boost, light a citrus scented candle and get going again! Lemon is also a wonderful kitchen scent, when you want to remove old cooking odors after frying fish, etc.

I often get requests for lemon, and I've found one that is complex and delightful. Lemon Grass is reminiscent of the tall Asian grass popular in Thai cooking. It's a strong lemon, but with a slight woody undertone, giving it a more earthy feel. You can see my current soy candle offerings with Lemon Grass and many more scents at ReBop Shop on Etsy.

Monty's Cute of the Day: This Belly Ain't Gonna Rub Itself

Monty has become obsessed with belly rubs. He flops on the floor in front of you and closes his eyes. If you don't respond immediately, he flops again and gives you "the look." You must rub the belly now! It happens whenever we enter a room, whenever we stand up, whenever a visitor comes in the door. Reader Question About Temporama by Canonsburg Pottery

While my online vintage shop is still closed (see post below), I was pleased to receive this question from a reader. It was attached to my post about Canonsburg Pottery:

I just purchased Temporama: 8 plates, 4 bowls, 8 saucers, 1 very sm bowl, 2 serving platters (1 larger than the other), gravy bowl, creamer, sugar bowl and what looks like a coffee pot. Do you know what year they were made? I saw on ebay they were wanting $9.99 for each plate. Could it be that expensive? I got it all for $25.oo. If you could help me I would appreciate it.

First of all, congratulations! Twenty-seven pieces for 25 bucks is a spectacular deal, and you are well on your way to building a great set of Atomic Age dishes. Canonsburg patterns are difficult to date, but Temporama was most likely produced in the early 1960s. My belief is that is originated in the mid to late 1950s, based upon the design, colors and shape.

Yes, $9.99 for a dinner plate in flawless condition is a reasonable price (you might expect to pay less per piece if purchasing a set). Temporama is probably the most desirable of all Canonsburg patterns, and is well worth that price.

About your pieces: the "very small bowl" is called a berry bowl or fruit dish. Search with those names if you seek more online. I'm assuming your other bowls are cereal bowls (if slightly larger). The gravy boat would have originally come with a solid aqua oval underplate, but, fortunately, that server is perfectly usable without it. Matching coffee pots and teapots were more common in vintage dinnerware than they are today, and they are swell additions to any set.

You mention eight saucers, but no teacups. You should be able to purchase those online at a bargain price, as dealers who have cups but no saucers have to accept less than full value for orphan cups.

The Chicago Blizzard: Mother Nature Reminds Us Who's Boss

The blizzard of 2011 has hit #3 on the list of Chicago's worst snowfalls. For those interested, #1 was in 1967 and #2 was in 1999. The official total at O'Hare is 20.2" of snow since yesterday. ComEd reports 58,000 people without power (not us, obviously). We already had some snow on the ground, so our total at home is more than 2 feet in the lowest spots, and chest-high drifts in other spots. Sorry the photos are so dark, but it was still snowing when I shot them.

View down our street. All the 1920s bungalows have identical front steps and porches, which have disappeared. Ours is in the lower left foreground, under there somewhere. For reference, I waded through waist-deep snow, from which I am taking this photo.

Monty is very happy to be inside. Yes, the snow is as high as our front window! There was no morning paper, and we're certain there will be no mail. No car has ventured onto our street since last night.

Butterscotch Envy

Even though our Spotlight Series article about Canonsburg Potteries was posted almost two years ago, we still get wonderful comments and questions at the post here http://rebopshop.blogspot.com/2009/01/spotlight-on-canonsburg-pottery-co-1901.html.

Today we got this comment:

I just bought a home with some of the contents still inside. They left a Canonsburg butterscotch dinner set in the cabinets, I was going to throw them out. I am glad I decided to research them. I have to count the pieces to see how many there are. Could anyone tell me if these dishes need any special care? It looks like somewhat complete set of 8 place settings with coffee mugs as well.

Be still my beating heart! What a thrill it would be to have a complete set of Butterscotch. Regarding care, I told the reader that all drip glaze dinnerware is pretty durable stuff. We have never owned a dishwasher, however, so I don't know whether that's okay for Butterscotch or not.

If you are not familiar with butterscotch drip glaze, this is our photo of two Hull Pottery pieces to give you an example. It was not produced as prolifically as brown drip glaze, but it was popular for a time all the same in the 1960s-70s.

Holiday Candles are Here!

If you give them as a gift, or as a special treat for yourself, there's no need to put them away after the new year! Our holiday candles come and go quickly, as I have several craft fairs in November and December...so if you see something available on the website, grab it! It might be gone tomorrow.

I don't know about you, but the cookbooks in our kitchen are a mess. Full of stains, dog ears and writing--I like to record the date and add notes when I try a new recipe.

So I was amazed at the pristine condition of several vintage cookbooks we recently acquired. They're new at http://www.rebopshop.com/ this week, and represent some of the most collectible cookbooks of the 1960s:

This is a rare blue cover 1963 First Edition, First Printing of McCall's Cook Book. It's in superb condition with no tears, fading, stains or writing at all! "The Absolutely Complete Step-by-Step Cooking and Serving Guide" is massive. It has 786 pages with 37 chapters and Appendix.

Also from 1963, this is a first edition, first printing of Betty Crocker's Cooky Book. Every page seems to express joy and love...you can't help but get a warm, nostalgic feeling from this delightful cookbook!

This Campbell Cookbook from 1967 is titled, Easy Ways to Delicious Meals: 465 Quick-to-Fix Recipes Using Campbell's Convenience Foods. It comes from a time when using "convenience" foods was an occasional necessity. In the 21st Century, you might find this is as elaborate as you want to get with your cooking!

Fall fell quickly in Chicago, but we're toughing it out and have not yet turned on the furnace. So Monty has been very "cuddly" lately, seeking a warm lap or squeezing in between us on the couch. Here he scored with the afghan left conveniently bunched up. He often covers up that pink nose of his while sleeping.

New Ways to Look at Vintage Milk Glass

Vintage milk glass appeals to a broad range of collectors, as it's still an affordable vintage treasure! We have a few unusual examples at the moment that may surprise you.

Did you know Pyrex made milk glass restaurant ware? This 8-piece set of teacups and saucer is in the Revel Red pattern. Their marks date them from the 1960s-1978. See the set in more detail here http://www.rebopshop.com/item_611/Pyrex-Revel-Red-Set-of-4-Cups-721-and-Saucers-796.htm.

Since both these Anchor Hocking pieces (one with a Fire King mark) have the same raised grape design, we are offering them as a pair--an instant collection! I believe both originally had lids, now gone, but we think they make a beautiful display and would be great as vases. Hazel Atlas made milk glass that worked hard for a living! This 6" ivy pattern bowl was originally part of a nesting set of mixing bowls. The newest addition to our milk glass inventory is from a company we hadn't heard of before yesterday! These 1960s teacups with 18th Century scenic decals are by Termocrisa Mexico, a company that created milk glass for South American markets in the 1960s-70s. We have read that many of their designs were Fire King "knock-offs," but the quality was still very fine. Zucchini Bread: Heart-Healthy Version

The seed packet said to pick the zucchinis when they reach 6" long. Then torrential rains came to Chicago while we were out of town....and we came home to two of them more than a foot long! So it was time to make zucchini bread. After sharing with neighbors, and eight loaves in the freezer, my zucchini harvest appears over.

This recipe is a compilation of several low-fat ones I found online plus my mom's. It's heart-healthy because there are no egg yolks and half the oil is replaced with applesauce. I've tweaked everything to make the recipe my own.

3 egg whites
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. olive oil
1 c. applesauce
3 tsp. vanilla
2 c. shredded zucchini
3 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. allspice
4 oz chopped walnuts

Beat egg whites, sugar, oil, applesauce and vanilla. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Divide into two greased loaf pans. Bake 55 minutes at 350 degrees (40 minutes for small loaf pans). Set on rack for 20 minutes before removing from pan, and cool a bit more before cutting.

You can make this even more low-fat by excluding the walnuts, or replacing them with raisins. But I think they're essential!

We've Got Mail: Canonsburg Moss Rose China

We heard from a reader, Barb, who is asking about her family china:

I have a set of Canonsburg Moss Rose dishes that were my mom's and her aunt's before that. Do you know what year or years they were made? They are the plain ones without the gold rim or scallops. I love them for the beautiful look (roses) and the sentimental value.

Rose china patterns were popular throughout the 20th Century--there are thousands! And "Moss Rose" was a name given by almost every pottery in America to one of their patterns. It turns out Canonsburg Pottery Co. (1901-1978) had three different patterns by that name!

Without seeing the backstamp on Barb's dishes, it's impossible to date them. However, the "plain" shape she mentions, also called coupe, is generally attributed to the 1950s-1960s. Pictured is the pattern and shape she may be writing about. If not, please let us know! And if you would like more specific date information, Barb, you may email a photo of the backstamp to us at info@rebopshop.com.

If we've got Barb's pattern right, the value of her set could be in the hundreds of dollars. Dinner plates are valued at $12, teacup/saucer sets at $24, a complete cream and sugar set at $40, and serving pieces ranging $20-$80 in value. These are "book value" prices, of course, for pieces in flawless condition.

The important thing, as Barb mentions, is the sentimental value. To hand down vintage china from one generation to the next is a wonderful way to stay connected to your family! And one great benefit of the internet is the ability to fill in those sets from sources around the world, regardless of how rare they are. Just be sure the dealer from which you purchase is experienced: that she describes condition in detail, shows photos including the backstamps, and packs with extreme care and ships to you with insurance.

Spotlight Series: Frances Parkinson Keyes

I believe Crescent Carnival was the first novel I read by Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970). I've always loved New Orleans, and came upon it at an estate sale many years ago. Then I found Dinner at Antoine's and I was hooked. After a rather spiritual visit to the Beauregard-Keyes house museum in the French Quarter, I purchased a few more out-of-print hardcovers from its wonderfully crowded gift shop.

Mrs. Keyes was an amazingly prolific author throughout most of the 20th Century. To say her novels were romantic would be dismissive--they are also important historic works. I fell in love with her complex female characters, who wrestled their challenges with strength and independence while maintaining the womanly virtues their era demanded (and which Mrs. Keyes obviously felt were important). Her books carried me away to a time of genteel living, when etiquette reigned regardless of the tragedy of your situation. While some of her ethnic characters are blatantly stereotyped, they reflected the times. When you're reading a Keyes novel, you always know where you are...and you adapt to those surroundings.

Hot August Orange

August reminds me of orange...maybe because it's the hot yet waning part of summer. So I thought I'd share some of the orange delights currently offered at ReBop Shop.

This fabulous vintage 70s Hawaiian Maxi Dress explodes in orange and hot pink! In cool and comfortable 100% cotton pique, the dress is sized Medium. It features cap sleeves, a scoop back and flowing pleats down the back.

These Cera Glass Tumblers feature bold tulips in orange and yellow. We also have a matching set of double-old fashioned size glasses to complete your retro patio bar.

Amazing but true, this 1970s Veggies Tablecloth had been stored unused for decades. It's crisp and fresh as new in orange, mustard yellow and avocado green over an ivory background.

I picked up the orange in the flowers of this sweet Crown Staffordshire grandmug in the English Garden pattern to create this Gardenia Scented Soy Candle. At 11 oz, it will burn for 66+ hours. And since soy wax cleans up with soap-and-water, the elegant mug remains perfect and perfectly usable once the candle is gone.

Finally, while it's more subtle, there's orange in this Autumn Leaf Platter by Hall China, a much beloved pattern that was first produced in the 1930s for the Jewel Tea Company.

Continental Kilns "Green Arbor" for Joel

Today I'm pleased help a reader with his 1950s family china. Joel saw our post on Canonsburg Pottery here http://rebopshop.blogspot.com/2009/01/spotlight-on-canonsburg-pottery-co-1901.html and presented a mystery to be solved...why does his matching set have two different maker's marks and what is the pattern? He sent me photos to help with the detective work.

Joel, your dinnerware set is in the Green Arbor pattern. Continental Kilns of Chester, West Virginia, was only in business from 1944-1957. Someone suggested that your china looks like Franciscan's Desert Rose, and it does! Since Desert Rose was introduced in 1941, chances are Continental created a similar pattern, which was a very common practice.

But you also have Canonsburg pieces in your set, and these are not imitations--they are identical matching pieces (with natural variations since it's all hand painted). Green Arbor is not shown anywhere that I can find as a Canonsburg pattern. Some potential scenarios are: 1) Canonsburg purchased the Continental patterns when it went out of business; 2) Canonsburg had an arrangement with Continental and they both produced the pattern simultaneously; or 3) Canonsburg produced some Green Arbor for a particular department store. (There may be more possibilities.)

Bottom line is that I would call this a Continental Kilns pattern. Here are Joel's photos. This is a Continental Kilns plate and its backstamp:

If anyone has any more information or questions, feel free to comment on this post. I'm just nuts about vintage china, and I love the research and stories about all the 20th century American potteries that once existed. Sadly, only a handful remain.

Scents Saturday: Chocolate

The candle scent that far and away tops all others for surprising reactions at craft fairs is my Chocolate! Its full name is "Chocolate To Die For" and it certainly lives up to it. There's nothing candy bar about this one--it is the deep, rich aroma of chocolate melting on the stove for an old fashioned recipe.

This Chocolate scent is stronger in soy candles than anything you can get in paraffin wax! And, of course, there are many other advantages of soy wax, including a longer and cleaner burn. And since soy wax cleans up easily with soap and water, the vintage china containers in which they are poured remain perfect and perfectly usable once the candle is gone. While I have always been a devotee of midcentury kitsch, my decorative tastes have gained a new dimension since we moved into a 1920s arts and crafts bungalow 11 years ago: I find myself lately drawn to earthy pottery pieces. Earth Day Musings: The 4th "R" is Refuse!

After learning about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," the horror of the situation led to some real changes in our household. The idea that we were thoughtlessly buying into the excess of plastic packaging made me ashamed. And angry. And willing to look at every aspect of our consumerism.

There's a 4th "R" that should come before all others! It's REFUSE! If we Just Say No to more of the single-use plastics in our lives, then the other "R's"--Reduce, Reuse, Recycle--become much easier.

The easiest thing was to eliminate plastic shopping bags. Washable canvas bags now serve all our needs. I carry one with me for any kind of shopping, we keep a couple in the car, and five are just perfect for a week's worth of groceries. If we're tempted to slack, all we have to do is look out at any city street: plastic bags fly by on windy days, they are caught in trees and wires, they nestle in doorways. Just stop and look some time...they really are everywhere.

--Eggs
We hardly gave it a thought, but we usually have a choice of styro or paperboard egg cartons. Duh! Choose the paper!
--Meat
We try to select meat at the counter (rather than the coolers) and ask for it to be wrapped in paper alone, no plastic or styro tray. It's really unnecessary.
--Jars
I've read that glass is much easier to recycle than plastic. Unfortunately, glass jars are getting more difficult to find. But when we have the choice, we choose glass jars for mayo, peanut butter, jelly, etc. Same holds true for choosing cans over plastic containers.
--Pasta
We usually have a choice of paper box or plastic bags for pasta, noodles, rice and such. We choose the paper.
--Bottles
We never buy bottled water. Honest. But there is the occasional tonic water or club soda for cocktails! The small bottles stay in the fridge, refilled with fine Lake Michigan Tap Water. The larger ones, as you can see below, are absolutely the most perfect protection for tender seedlings in the garden. They protect them from wind, allow air through the top, and act like little greenhouses ensuring the seedlings stay warm and moist. (Our compost bin is at the back.)

--Processed Foods
The amount of plastic used in processed foods packaging is just obscene. We don't buy processed foods because we cook from scratch, but occasionally we end up with something that leaves us with a vessel that will last forever. So we use them as: leftover containers, pots for my seedlings, cat food dishes, nails-and-screws holders, office supply organizers and more. We're not only reusing the containers, but we're not buying new plastic containers for those purposes.

Okay, that's our personal life. In my professional life, the reality is I use styrofoam peanuts and plastic bubble wrap for packing fragile items for shipping. Unfortunately, I just haven't been able to find safe substitutes. I don't trust those air pillows (yes, they can deflate). Newspaper is messy and adds weight to the package, making shipping more expensive. The best I can do is ask customers to please reuse my packing materials in the hope that they keep circulating over and over again.

Remember, every bit of plastic that has been produced to date still exists somewhere on the planet! I don't want to preach, I just want to share our eye-opening experience. Scents Saturday: Cranberry Zest

My hands-down favorite muffin is cranberry orange. So I absolutely love this scent!

Cranberry Zest is dominated by fresh, tart cranberries. Fruit scents for candles and bath/body are among the most popular these days, and I like mine to be complex. This one also has hints of orange peel and spices. Together they create a wonderful blend that fills the room with warmth.

Here I have paired a modern Italian pottery salad plate with 1960s Currier & Ives dinner and bread plates by Royal China USA. Imagine some yellow tulips as a centerpiece for a lovely Sunday brunch!

Linen Closet Fort: Monty's Cute of the Day

And Monty's no exception. We looked everywhere for him the other day and were starting to get worried! Turns out he discovered the linen closet.

Now that guest towel is a daybed. And this is his new super-duper secret fort.
